The University of Ilorin, popularly known as UNILORIN, is a well-known public federal university that is located in Ilorin, Kwara State. It is the largest university in Nigeria and also amongst the largest universities in Africa, sitting on over hectares of land. Reports indicate that some parts of the university are still not explored due to the large mass of land.
The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) was established in 1975 as a university college that, at that time, depended on the University of Ibadan as an affiliation body until 1977, when the university gained full autonomy to operate as an institution rather than depending on the University of Ibadan.
Prior to 1977, when the university gained full anonymity, the university admitted its first set of students in 1976 with a total number of 200 students who were taken through an entrance examination, which they passed. The students who passed this examination were admitted across all three faculties that existed in the university as at then.
The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), at the time of its establishment, operated on its temporary site, which at that time was located in Kwara State Polytechnic before moving to its present location, which is located in Ilorin, after the completion of several faculties that brought the movement of students into the faculties.
The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) is regarded as one of the best federal universities in Nigeria, which follows in the footsteps of other federal universities like the University of Ibadan (UI) and the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
