The Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Abeokuta, is a specialised health federal university that was established by the Federal Government under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The establishment of the Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Abeokuta, is a seed that was formed by the former medical director of the Federal Medical Center, Abeokuta, Professor Adewale Musa Olomu, who wanted to expand the hospital to also be a research learning centre and hub.
The idea was welcomed and presented to the Senate House in 2018, and this was welcomed in the House, eventually passing its third reading in 2021 because of its importance and the solution it offers to medical applicants who are unable to secure admission into higher learning institutions because of strict admission quotas.
Two years after the University Bill was passed in the Senate house, the bill was signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari, who signed it into law and even appropriated ₦5 billion to aid the takeoff of the Federal University in terms of infrastructural development and facilities building, but the university did not commence operation until 2025 under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who appointed the first governing council.
The Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Abeokuta, initially commenced operation in 2025 on its temporary site of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUAAB), while its permanent site was under construction.
The university has undergone accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC), and also there is a plan in place to make Federal Medical Center Abeokuta the teaching hospital of the institution.
