Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, is a state-owned university that is located in Ekpoma, Edo State.

The Ambrose Alli University journey began with the then former governor of Edo State, Governor Ambrose Alli, who during his tenure implemented various education policies in the state that brought a rapid change in the state, increasing the numbers of educated youths in the state, but the gap sprang up because of these policies and the unavailability of tertiary institutions.

Even though University of Benin (UNIBEN) is already situated in Benin, it was unable to cater to the large numbers of youths that are willing to attend higher learning institutions, and thus, in 1981, a committee was set up by Governor Ambrose Alli to establish a university in the state.

The committee submitted the report to the governor, who in turn submitted the bill to the state assembly, which, after many deliberations, passed the bill into law, and thus the university was established.

Although the university was established in 1981, the university was officially opened in 1982, which was the day of laying the stone of the foundation of the institution.

Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, at the time of establishment, was named Bendel State University, Ekpoma, in 1981 but was renamed Edo State University in 1992 after the creation of more states in the 1990s, and finally, in 1999, under the administration of the then-Governor Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion, it was finally renamed from Edo State University to Ambrose Alli University after its founder.

Admission Requirements

● Applicants must have at least five (5) credit passes in relevant O’Level subjects (WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, or equivalent); the five credits must include English Language and Mathematics.

● Medicine and surgery course Candidates are allowed to use one (1) sitting.

● Candidates must sit for the UTME examination conducted by JAMB.

● Applicants must meet the required cut-off mark for their chosen course for 2026/2027.
