Federal University of Technology Owerri, also called FUTO, is a federal public-owned university that specializes mostly in offering technology-based courses. The university is located in Owerri, which serves as a capital city for Imo State.
Federal University of Technology Owerri was established in 1980 by the first executive president of Nigeria, Shehu Shagari, in order to drive Nigeria Technological development: The establishment of the university came as a need to establish a university of technology in each geopolitical zone of Nigeria.
When Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) was established, it was merged with Alvan Ikoku College of Education Owerri, also incorporating the students inside them. The university at an earlier stage of establishment only began with just 200 students who studied various courses in the institution.
Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) has a history among universities in Nigeria; it is one of the oldest technology-based universities across West Africa, and it is the only federal university of technology that is located in the whole eastern region of Nigeria.
Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) is ranked amongst the 30th best universities in Nigeria. The university is known for securing partnerships with global brands, including Cisco and Interswitch, and this partnership yielded a positive impact as these organizations donated digital switches and access points to the institution.
